What I did

Flag of Poland  , Baltic Coast,
Saturday, June 23, 2012

Gdansk is a funny sounding name on the Baltic coast of Poland.  For the last month, I've been all around the Baltic sea and Baltic states.  This is the last stop on the Baltic sea that I will go.  There are 3 cities here called the tri cities.  Gdansk, Sopot and Gydnia.  Gdansk is a great city.  The first stop was old town.  Old town is a typical old town as the other Eastern European cities except a little bit different.  This town is a strip that lead to the water.  The strip starts with a gate to the city and it goes maybe just shy of a KM.  It is quite long and all the buildings are connected pretty much the whole KM and each one has a shop in the bottom, maybe a hotel above it, but they have have different colors and designs on them, which made them unique.  They are all about 4-5 stories high and each have something unique at the top of them like a Japanese roof, a statue or something like that.  I got a little cholostrophic here.  There are thousands of fans here for the Euro soccer tournament.  Today, Greece and Germany play.  It's a world cup qualifier.  From there, I went to this area of Gdansk called Westerplatte.  It would be 15 minutes in a car to this place, but I had to take a tram 30 minutes, then go to a ferry across the river, which was 1 KM from the tram, then walk another 3 KM, take another bus and finally I made it.  The reason I went to Westerplatte was that one of the World War's started here.  I thought it would be some kind of building where they had a meeting here, but it was just a monument where the first battle took place.  I was quite tired as this short distance of traveling to get to Westerplatte took about 4 hours. There was also some severe traffic problems because of the Euro soccer torunament.  Most of the road traffic fell way behind as the country focused more on the stadiums to be finished and delayed the road traffic, but the road traffic problems were not in the city center.  They were just a bit outside of the city, so it did not effect everyone.
