10/11/08 Day 13

We woke up early and neither of us showered. Amanda said she would get dirtier in the shower.  I'm starting to understand the girls needs and take care of them.  She is a picky eater because of being a vegetarian and I am also picky about my food, so I know it is hard to find food that I like as well as her, but I am constantly looking for something for her to eat when she does start to complain or get moody.  We have had a good balance of our moods on this trip.  She has been in a little worse mood than me because I know what to expect out of these trips.  She doesn't.  One of us is almost keeping a straight head on our shoulders though.  So if I'm in a bad mood, she can usually pull me out of it.   We left for Copan Honduras, which was two different two hour busses.  These busses are horrible.  We had first class busses in Mexico, but these ones were chicken busses as they call them.  The busses were late as usual.  The bus drivers stop way to much for pointless stuff.  Once we stopped for hour for a bathroom break.  One time on this trip, we stopped ten minutes before our final destination.  I don't understand why they don't want to just get there.  Between stops, there was a bathroom that had shit on the walls and it was just horrible.  They didn't have toilet paper either and Amanda went in and walked right back out and she was looking for napkins, but couldn't find them, so I gave her an old shirt and she went behind the building.  That is how bad these bathrooms were.  Everytime a bus stops, there are people on the sides of the roads that jump on the bus and try to sell you stuff.  It is actually really sad that this is how those people live.  Their job is to sell food.  I don't even think the food is safe either.  I mean some of them sell beef or chicken that is definitely not safe.  It probably has all kinds of ecoli in it.  There is still garbage everywhere and I don't think cops care about anything really.  I mean people just pee in the middle of the street.  There was a drunk guy in the back of the bus that gave me a vilda vida beer, which is "the beer" of Honduras.  It was pretty good.  We arrived the Copan ruins around 1 PM and it was pretty cool.  We actually got to climb on the ruins!  There were pyramids and other statues.  It was different than chichen itza.  There were tombs and statues that honored other people.  There were a lot more symbols there than chichen itza.  The stone carvings were cool.  I got the feeling that this place was a little more evil than chichen itza.  All the faces and carvings were mean looking and they all had weapons in their hands.  Copan was ten minutes from the Guatemala border, so we just took a taxi there.  We paid our departure fee for leaving the country and took a mini van to a place called Chiquitos or something like that and could not go any further that night.  A guy at the bus station took us to this hotel.  They get commission, so taxi drivers and others will even lie to you and tell you that you can't take a bus and you must go to this hotel, but anyway we went to this hotel and I bargained with the dude and told him that it was way too much money and almost left to a hotel down the road, but I went on the internet and found out that he was asking $12 and I only wanted to pay $10.  I laughed about it later because I thought he was charging me $35, but just had my currencies mixed up.  I have used four different currencies now. There was no hot water in the city where we stayed and since Amanda didn't shower yesterday, I had to make sure that this would be OK for her and she said it would do, so we stayed there.
