In order to beat the strong Patagonian head wind, we set out at 6:00am the next morning. The morning light was fantastic and we did about 25km before stopping for coffee and muffin in a small hotel on the road side. The rest of the morning was fun as we all ride together and chit-chat. The spirits were high and we thought we could pull a big day and cover 140km all the way to El Chalten. Right after lunch, the wind picked up quite fiercely and by 1:00pm, we decided to stopped after 70km and wait for the wind to calm down. We stopped at the only house in miles yet no one was there so we set camp in the hills accross the road. Our water reserves were very low so we took our water bags and went to the house to get water from a outside tab. The hills were very dry and sandy and with the help of our lovely wind, a fine layer of sand was layed in our tents. I tried to clean it but the sand came back as quickly as I wiped it out. The wind was still very strong outside so we slept, read in the afternoon. The evening wind was calmer so we cooked outside our tents. In regards to the next day, the plan was to get up at 3:00am, beat the wind, ride for 70km and arrive in El Chalten early morning, hopefully in 4 hours. Usually, the wind in Patagonia calms down by 9:00pm and pick up in late morning. Everyone went to bed early and hopefully, we can get to destination early.
