So we decided to drive to Matala, which wa not very far away from Agia Galini, and supposed to be touristy enough to have tavernas still open around 4pm! The place is reputed very touristic, but very nice, thanks to large clay cliffs going down into the sea from each side of the beach, on which the little village has been built.
On one side of the beach (right hand side if you are looking at the sea), the cliff has been excavated for ages (some say before the Romans came) to be used as troglodyte houses. More recently, it was inhabited by the first occupants of the region for ages, i.e. the hippies that stoppeds here on their way to India in the 70's and developped a strong community in Matala. Still nowadays, most of the people living in Matala are hippies or former hippies from this period. The town has been built by these people.
We stayed until sunset, Matala turning towards west, and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, no picture was taken there, because I had no more battery in my camera (shame!).
