Arrived Wichita Falls, Texas around noon and a quick stop at the info centre got us a lead to a barbecue place for lunch. The Branding Iron turned out to be one of the best barbecue joints we've ever been too. In the seediest part of town were parked every pick-up truck in Texas - good sign ! Well, right on, it was great ! Back on the road toward Abilene arriving late, stopped for groceries and looking at our campsite directory we see a free camp, Johnson Park on Ft. Phantom Lake just a few miles north of Abilene. Off we go, as free is good. Directions are poor but with the GPS we find our way there. A great sunset and a moose steak diner courtesy of Rita's sister Judy and a bottle of wine we slept peacefully to sounds of Coyotes all night plus what seemed like endless visitors. Turns out this park is the local hot spot for the young & restless of Abilene. Woke to a beautiful but COLD sunrise, made a french toast breakfast and then off to Midland. BUT, down the road we find the largest auto scrap yard in Texas. And, there's a Vanagon in sight. Stop, get the door handle to replace the broken one, $5 and off we go to Midland. Abilene to Midland is West Texas at it's best, Cotton fields, oil wells, cattle and windmills. Midland around noon and we are with my cousin having a well deserved beer. We will stay for a day or two to catch up on chores like laundry, an oil change and some minor repairs. Then we're off towards Tucson and Buses By The Bridge.
