Dali City

I arrived in Dali about 5 days ago and what a surprise, a really cool place. The town has got some great architecture and old streets that survived China's "cultural revolution'. During that time many of China's oldest buildings and artwork were destroyed. Because of the authentic feel here, the place is crawling with chinese tourists but hardly any foreigners like me (from Europe, Canada...).In fact, the first day I was here I counted only 3 foreigners on the street. At my guesthouse there's also a few foreigners and there's quite a few cafe's and restaurants serving western food and speaking english in the area. You can sit at one and watch the chinese tourists walk by or observe the old ladies from the hills and mountains in the area trying to sell dumplings or souveneirs.
In spite of all this, most of the town has minimal western influence. You can get pringles and other western treats, but if you walk 100 M down the road, you're into the chinese speaking part of town. This creates a really cool situation: you have the interesting cultural experiences combined with the comforts of home. I found a guesthouse with hot/cold showers, free internet, free washing machine, good food and music for about $1.20 a night (dorm room bed).
