Sinai
Entry 12 of 27 | show all | print this entry |
From Alexandria we drove back to Cairo for one last night. We went out for dinner on a boat on the Nile. Yesterday on the 30th we drove from Cairo to Sinai, to the town at bottom of mount Sinai. It was a 8 hour drive. Amazing scenery, we drove under the Suez canal, unfortunately we couldn't really see it, to go threw on a boat you pay 3 American dollars a tonne, some boats pay well over a million dollars to go threw, the canal generates millions for the economy here. We drove down the gulf of Suez before cutting into the village near the mountain. Almost no vegetation just sand and mountains and sea, so many check points, the governments sets these up to give people jobs, all armed with sniper rifles and guns, crazy. Sinai is part of Asia where the rest of Egypt is Africa, so we crossed from one contiant to another. Alot colder here. James was the only one of us four that climbed the mountain, the rest of us weren't feeling up to it. James set off at 2am in the morning to climb the mountain with the rest of group on the 1st. Its about 2 hours to top, he said it was freezing, the watched sun rise before descending. At midday we drove to Nuweiba where at 2pm we were meant to cross to Jordan by hydro foil, the toilets were unusable, no food, plus James and rest of climbers were as tied as hell from no sleep. At 8pm we finally left after 7hours waiting doing nothing, James got pretty sick with vomiting, the runs and share tiedness from waiting, Seb was already unwell with stomach and throat and I with saw throat and stomach, Dad ok. We finally got to Jordan and hotel in Aqaba just before midnight. What a day, an experience none of us want again in a hurry. The management and organization in certain parts of Egypt in ludicrouse, non existent. We all woke this morning being the 2nd feeling much better, we heading off at midday north in Jordan. Its alot more developed here considering its so poor compared to Egypt, much more western. Although it was a tough last few days, Sinai was beautiful, amazing landscape.
