Fairytale Part Zwei
Entry 93 of 115 | show all | print this entry |
The best part of arriving directly into the motherland of amazing beer is not simply the beer itself, but the knowledge that your very presence there makes your friends jealous. Within two hours of arriving in Bavaria, I was invited to a free beer tasting session. The comparison between Bavaria and Asia is not only half a world apart, but many. I knew at the moment that I would be drinking Weißbier for the rest of my time there. I took a picture of my first full pint, and sent it to my Canadian beer partner in crime. I was given a warning in reply - a warning that to me, should only prompt further antagonizing from myself (being that I am several thousand kilometres from his wrath).
The second best part (disputably) of arriving into the motherland of amazing beer is that they not only have amazing beer, but also have been doubly blessed by the making of chocolate, bread, and other foods. Let me focus on the chocolate here - I can never eat an American 'chocolate bar' ever again. If I do, I think depression shall overcome every one of my tastebuds. I can't describe the marzipans, nougats, truffles, liquers, darks, lights, and all the others with anything but a very loud metaphysics-escaping sigh of joy. As a Tom Hanks character once said regarding German boxes of chocolate - 'that's all I have to say about that'.
As for the fam - I met my lovely Mother and sister duo two days later again, at the hauptbahnhof - a testament to the profundity of the German rail system. (I think these folks are simply good at everything) We plotted our German vacation, and reveled in the beauty afforded by years of architecture, sausage, beer, bread and cheese here.
I am suspicious now of every German I met hiking in Canada, NZ, Australia, and the rest of the world who, upon being asked why they travel so much, explained to me how boring and horrible their homeland is. I guess near-perfection really is a drag after a while. Not for me...Now, bitte zurückbleiben.
