Today Granny A, Grampa R, and I drove south into Washington state. We did some lovely cross-border shopping at a despicable chain-store behemoth called Target. I had a lovely country-style breakfast in the picturesque, folksy, "Centre-street America" town of Lynden. We drove the beautiful Chuckanut highway along the west coast from Bellingham to Highway 20. The Chuckanut was an important highway carved into the rocks in the twenties, which saved the folk in the north from having to take boats to get to Seattle. I love winding, rocky coast drives with trees encroaching upon you throughout your trip. It gives one more of a sense of smallness and humbleness in his place with nature. I feels less like we needed to conquer old mother earth, and flatten her down so we could have safe, straight, ten lane highways. The Chuckanut is just that, much like the drive from Victoria to Port Alberni on Vancouver Island.

We stopped at Anacortes for lunch, and checked out the local dry-dock and bay. A nice view, but the refinery across the bay was a little imposing, threatening to spill its wares into the sea. The entire day has been beautiful, but I cannot get over the uneasy feeling I always have when going into the States. It is certainly not the fault of the people I meet, for they are friendly enough, but I think it is this media-induced impression I have of what stereotypical Americans are like. I keep bracing for their arrogance and rudeness to hit me, but it rarely comes. (Certainly not much more than in Canada). I really hope I can get over myself, because I hate to have an unwarranted disdain for people who never did anything wrong to me! I guess I haven't really probed into the supposedly "brash" minds much though, so how can I tell what their attitude towards the world is? Something to look forward to discovering.

Anyways, Anacortes is a lovely coast town/city with houses sprawled across the hilly coast. Many of the people are dry-dock workers, and many of the houses are old have a lot of character. The mix is cool - simple life on the ocean, mixes with some richer folks trying to have a 'posh' existence in this oil-shipping town.
