Ermmm, writing this a few days behind so it'll just take a minute to think back...oh yeah, not such an early start today, up at six left by seven to take the twenty minute walk back to the train station which wasn't so bad, it wasn't so hot at that time and no one struggled too much
We had planned to do this "jungle railway" between Tanah Merah and Gemas for a while but couldn't get a local train as planned to get the proper feel, apparently all the local trains have now been taken out of service now and only the ekspress trains run,
Just going to lift this bit straight out of the book ;
"It took indentured Tamil labourers eight years to achieve the remarkable feat of building the five hundred kilometre jungle railway from Gemas, southeast of KL, to Tumpat on the northeast coast. The first section from Gemas to Kuala Lipis opened in 1920, with the full extent of the line following in 1931. Initially it was used exclusively for freight - for tin and rubber and later oil palm"
So anyway we had decided we wanted to see that, and it was pretty impressive at points, not quite passing through virgin jungle but still, some pretty cool views for the main part of the nine hour journey.
We reached Gemas and claire's first reaction was something like, oh god where have you brought us now...
Another little random town mainly on the map I think because of being a fairly major transit junction, where the northeast and north/south lines meet, but not much to it in size or anything going on, luckily for us we found a pretty smart little hotel - tropicana, who were having a promotion giving rooms out at 50 ringgit, which is just over w tenner and doesn't sound great, but that's what we've been paying here and most of them have been pretty rough, this however was new,spotless, lcd tv with a channel we could actually watch and yeah we were pretty happy.
After that we took a wander around the local food market just as it was packing up, got some samosa's and another murktabat ayam then tried the little cafe in the same building as the room and tried our luck with some nasi dishes but unfortunately it was all.a bit fishy!! Not great if you don't like that off fish aftertaste but we tried!!
