Last night we had a meal by the pool that the guesthouse prepared, sounded a very nice idea but the reality of it was not quite so nice, we'd been persuaded to go along and had saved the whole days money to do it and left just feeling a little bitter, we could have had a decent meal along the front for half what we paid, sold as a feast, delivered the cheapest food they could, but glad to eat and you live and learn fast.
Monday morning we made our way back to Trivandrum by bus walked the 1km (2km) to the rail station and bought our first train ticket!!! V.exciting - goons....
We got our first train!!!! and it was good, they seem to have got all public transport down to a fine art the trains are there when you are told they are going to be and you arrive when and where you are meant too, very good, very realiable. Met some more strangers of course, one English lady from glastonbury, one old man from Delhi (again, giving us his number and telling us to call when we get to Delhi) and another youngish local lad who we will Facebook!
We have officially become "the borrowers" every time we see tissue we have the urge to take it and take it we do! Everything here is cheap apart from toilet roll! Gold dust, we tell you, gold dust!! So we take this opportunity to apologize to all the restaurants in the past and in the future! (we do eat in the restaurants, we are not that bad yet).
No longer do we feel the feeling of having warm water as we shower, cold showers seem to be the way.
A few points, when we have been told its only a kilometers walk usually take 5 minutes... do not listen, not even to roadsigns they are always wrong! kilometers turn into miles and miles.
Arrived in Kollam around lunch time, took rickshaw to boat jetty and got mobbed by people to buy this trip, buy that trip, come sit in here they say...a/c office, free information, your bag heavy, come sit... arguing between themselves, quite funny though.
made a deal with one of the government agents there, got a cheap cheap room, two pound fifty each, I would say good but see pics!! Good enough for us! and cut price ferry and cut price tour for the afternoon,(we asked other travellers what they were paying and book wasn't wrong either!)
We took the boat/canoe tour around the back waters (6km from Kollam by rickshaw and crossed to island on a makeshift barge..coool) through a little village, we saw all kinds of fruit growing everywhere, did u know how pineapples grew? All the trees provided some sort of food, chilies, pepper, coconut, bananas.
It was all a nice experience, beautiful, interesting and peaceful for the first hour or two but after that we became a little bored - especially considering every time we stopped it was a way of trying to get you to spend yet even more money, (like the trip itself didn't cost us a fortune). So some good positives but a little negative. Even when we gave a small tip at the end, we didn't have much on us he kind of looked in his hand as if to say is that it, but hey again another lesson we have learnt, don't tip, you pay enough anyway and when its expected or isn't appreciated it takes away the meaning of it.
Today we are on the boat from kollam to alleppey, it has to be the best way to travel from one point to the other. it's so relaxing!
Even though it takes 8 hours it is well worth it for the comfort and the views are amazing, big fish boats with there crew waving as they go past, beautiful!
Lots of love, love us, xxx
