Ko Tao

Yes I know, it's been a while since the last entry. Its not because of slackness creeping into my bog keeping abilities, they've always been rather slack, rather Jen and I have slowed down our travelling pace to a crawl. We ended up staying in Ko Tao for much longer than we'd planned for a number of reasons, the main one being that it was a pretty great place to stay. Ko Tao is a pretty small island off the east coast of Thailand and it is next to the famous Ko(s) Phagnan and Samui, more famous for its diving than its all night parties or its high rise package tourism, its only really been a tourist destination for a few years. Being described in Lonely Planet as some sort of hidden backpacker's secret has ensured that it is firmly on the tourist map these days and for good reason. We took an overnight bus and boat journey from Bangkok whcih was pretty awful to be honest, being dropped off at a pier at 3AM and then waiting 4 hours for the boat, but we arrived in one piece and found accomodation fairly easily. It turned out the place we chose to stay was a good choice among several decidedly dodgy options on the island, the people were frendly and the food was great, Jen ensured good service during our stay by cutting one of the waiter's hair. So being an island, Ko Tao is blessed with several great beaches, I could give you a blow by blow account of our suntanning exploits and how I am much more tanned than Jen despite lying in till midday everyday whilst she got up to get a headstart, but that'd be boring. Snorkelling was a highlight of our stay on the island though, we took a day trip on a longtail boat around the island to some of the best sports, a great day only hindered slightly by the fact it tipped it down for the most of it and between the snorkel spots, we sat in the boat shivering like drowned rats. The snorkelling was great though and despite the initial panic at having hundreds of fish nibbling at you it was really good fun. Incidentally later on I saw a Basking Shark whilst snorkelling, it was pretty scary to be honest, I dont care how many poeple tell you they arent dangerous, they look like sharks, thats enough for me. Most of our nights in Ko Tao were great fun, following a sort of slow bar crawl down the beach until we reached the end where the pyromanic owners always decided that what a load of drunk people needed was rings of fire to jump through and flaming skipping ropes to jump over, as you can imagine, more peasure was taken in sitting and watching than partcipating. The other reason we spent almost two weeks in Ko Tao was the weather which closed in on us for a while, giving on off torrential rain for a 3 or 4 days and resulted in much amateur forecasting and susequent sunbathing plans ruined, oh well. We'v only got a week left on our Thai visa now which is a bit of an oversight but it also means that entries should pick up a bit. You lucky lucky people
