The downside to being in a hotel, with no shops around, is everything is very expensive, ie: one glass is milk is around 5 nz dollars, steaks around 65 nz dollars (USD35), + 20% mandatory tip, + tax. So definitely not an option for us. We did enjoy a small dinner last night, but today (after Gary found a servo and got some milk etc), we lived on cornflakes, toast (bought that with us from the campervan but not going in the backpack), bananas and 2 minute noodles. Kids love noodles, so they didn't seem to notice we were skimping
Left for the airport (5pm), via the hotel shuttle, quite early, in fact probably the earliest we've ever been before a flight and just as well. Every queue was exceptionally long. Just checking bags on was at least an hour, and then we had to go through customs, of couse in typical US efficiency there was one person on checking passports. After that it was another queue for scanning ie: shoes off, belts off etc etc. Finally, got through all of that, with not a lot of time to spare - good news is though: we got all the bags(11 big ones) checked on with no problem!
Boarded Air Berlin around 8.30pm. I dished out the blow up pillows, and some of us managed to get 40 winks, including Greta, who after many failed attempts to sleep in the chair promptly lay herself across the floor, covered herself with the blanket and we never heard from her until morning. Got to take a leaf out of her book.
