Again, like yesterday, (and as I'm sure the days to come), a picture speaks a thousand words, and a single photo will tell you much more than I can here. We travelled along Highway 93 and I need to make a note here about this infamous H/W 93 called the' Icefields Parkway' I'm going to quote from the Lonely Planet Guidebook..... "The Icefields Parkway is easily one of the most spectacular journeys in all of Canada (some say the world) - at every turn there is a view that draw you in. Mountains scrape the sky and the water below reflects upon the beautfy of it all
After our visit to the Sunwapta Falls, we took a tour on the Columbia Icefield to the Athabasca Glacier. You can't drive up the Glacier, but a tour bus takes you so far, and then the 'monster truck' (as our boys call it), took us straight down, near vertical, over the ice and onto the glacier. It was a beautiful day, with no wind (apparantly the day before the wind chill factor had been minus 20), and we got to throw ice balls, do the whole photo thing, and generally just marvel in the wonderment of nature. Apparantly there are periods called ice-age, and what we are now in, called 'advanced' stage, which is where the summers are longer and everything is melting. These periods can last 100yrs, 300yrs ..... Anyway, it was a real treat, and having been on the Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph,(in NZ) I wouldn't say it was better or worse, just different, and we're very pleased we did it.
On the way to Lake Louise we made a stop at Peyto Lake. A short walk up-hill, in the snow brough us face to face with this gorgeous lake - so turquoise you would think someone painted it! A fiting finish to an equally gorgeous day.
