We stayed at Mt Shasta camping ground last night and so the morning was taken up with a look around the small, quaint like township.  It was a Sunday, and there wasn't a lot happening (which acutally was nice to see on a Sunday).

From there we travelled directly up North, (passing by Klamath Lake) to Crater Lake.  We'd had this recommended to us , as a 'must see' ,  (from a kiwi/American we'd met at Hearst Castle).  It was amazing.  I think the Lonely Planet travel book describes this still water as a 'giant dark blue mirror'.  In fact we look at photos, and I think they almost looked super-imposed; the background looks false.   Let me assure you, it is VERY real.  Quite surreal.   There were lots of warnings about not getting too close to the edge in case you slip, so needless to say, we were forever holding on to little hands, that seemed intent on gawking not at the lake, but at the families of squirrels that live just over the viewing points.  Speaking of which, on our 33 mile rim drive of the lake, there were many, many stops.

Absolutely worth the visit.

We stayed at Crater Lake National Park, in Mazamar Village.  Quite by accident, we were staying the last night of the season (it closes for winter), so perfect, perfect  timing, (tomorrow would've been to late - and I'm sure there's a lesson in that)  AND  also, we'd managed to come into the National Park on it's 'free' day (normally it's about $10 + to get into the Nat. parks).    So double whammy for us - God is definitely on this trip.
