This is almost like a little village in itself, with some exquisite chocolate shops, Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant, home of the chowder (delicious!) etc. We had a great morning, shopping, sight-seeing and tasting. Unfortunately, everyone was feeling a little warm. Past experience (and from what we've heard) it can be a cold place, and certainly a chill comes off that water ... so I'd made everyone dress in jeans and jackets - well by lunchtime we were sweltering - there wasn't even a slight breeze!! Glorious day. This made our trip out on the ferry to Alcatraz extremely pleasant.
Alcatraz is a State Park. Cost was very reasonable at $20 per adult, and it was well organized, and detailed. It was a self guided tour, where you wore headphones and were guided around the prison. The voices guiding you were from past officers and prisoners. As they directed you through each section you would hear background noise eg: dining room clatter and chat, or the sound effects of a brawl. We got to see the actual cell of the break-out prisoners etc, etc - far too much to tell here. Unfortunately, there is no way it can really be captured properly in photos either (and video only to an extent), you have to feel the coldness of the concrete, hear the echos to experience it. But absolutely worth every penny, and Tara & Harry thought it was the best thing they've done so far.
Got back to camp and had to find our way out of the main city to get groceries. Nothing is easy as it seems....
