We haven't felt inclined to really big up any hotel or bar we've visited so far, but One More Beer on Naiplo Beach in Khanom deserves a special mention.
It's a big bar/restaurant run by an American family; Butch, Mike, Brian and Jen, as well as a lot of lovely Thai locals.
Our first encounter with these fine people was, you may recall, when we were saved from traipsing through the streets by Mike who came and picked us up in his jeep and brought us here
Vinny and I have a little experience in the hospitality trade, and when you see something that is really being run the way things should be run, you take notice.
Most of everything you want you can get from One More Beer. They have a ticket booking service, Internet access, mountain bike and motorbike rental, and lots of things that were too much outside out budget for us to enquire about but include speedboat hire, jeep hire and flight bookings.
The main thing though, is the level of care and attention they give everything - and it shows. It's refreshing in this part of the world to be somewhere that puts the customer first and not just the customer's baht. Yesterday Mike gave Vinny and me a tour of his house, because from the balcony at the top there was an amazing view of Kho Samui and he wanted us to see it.
They have rooms as well, but with air con and hot water these were out of our price range. We're actually staying down the road somewhere a lot cheaper, but you get what you pay for - last night I had to enter mortal combat with three cockroaches before I could go to bed, and I share my room with about thirty little geckos
When we mentioned that we would be leaving tommorrow night, Butch offered us one of his rooms for the day, after we check out of our place in the morning, so we can store our stuff and have a hot shower before we leave - FREE OF CHARGE!! That kind of thing stops being customer service and becomes something else entirely... especially when you consider that we haven't had a hot shower in three weeks.
The food is great, with a wide range of Thai meals but also the best cheeseburger in Thailand - and it really is, too.
It's a great place in a great place, and we heartily reccomend it.
Just get here before Lonely Planet does.
