Driving along Great Eastern Highway I found my mind wandering back to 2009 and when I was a newbie travelller in these foreign lands, armed with my rucksack full of dreams and a gung ho attitude which I knew would take me far...and it did! Within a month of being here in Australia I had already worked down south shearing sheep and was well into my swing as a cook in an outback roadhouse in Leonora, not far from where we were headed with our gold detector!
Looking out the window smiling, nostalgia overcomes me and I am taken back to my 6am train journey to Coolgardie three years ago, where I thought I was going to be working, only to arrive there after a nightmare 6 hour train journey with a raging hangover (thanks to you Ross!!), to find my new bosses were shipping me another 300kms north into the outback to Leonora!
We pass through the Merredin and Southern Cross en route to Coolgardie, stopping for a little prospect along the way. I smile as we drive past Eagle roadhouse where and we head onwards to Kalgoorlie. Arriving into town it is dark but Dayne is still blown away by the beauty of the place, which again makes me think it is a shame he has grown up in a concrete jungle without the beautiful architecture we have in Europe.
Up early and out bush the next morning we get into our detecting, hoping to recreate the findings of the gold rush in the late 19th century. Unfortunately all we did was experience how easy it is to get lost in the outback, after wandering off on our way to to tractor. We suddenly realised we didn't have a clue where we were, had no markers to assist us and were well and truly lost. After walking in every direction in the hope of finding our way back, we were no closer to finding tractor...until we came across a little bush track that we must have entered the wilderness by. Splitting up we walked opposite ways up the track and eventually I came across a little white spec behind a tree! It was tractor!! We were so lucky, had we not come across the track we would never have found our way back as we were miles away from tractor and walking in the completely wrong direction!
Anyway...after several days of digging up nothing other than tins, nails, buckets and bullets I was getting a little bored of the whole thing, thinking how I could find treasure way more easily in going to the theatre, meeting new people and encountering new experiences. Dayne though was not giving up so easily. So here we were with the sun setting around us and soon to be plunged into darkness other than the moon and stars above. I was sitting in tractor and Dayne was, by now, out of sight. Suddenly I heard a yell, he had found gold!! I headed over with the torch and there it was in all it's glory; a little gold nugget!
