Where I stayed
Being me, I almost missed the bus as they changed locations ánd I left it too late getting there. But a very unfriendly taxi driver dropped me off in time and it turned out I was not the only one being late. Yes, Mira and I were also Sunweb bus-lemmings for a week. 14 hours by bus, no problem, hence for the annoyingly cold arconditioning. Who on earth needs it to be so cold in the bus? So there we were on our way to France, Val Thorens, in April. Will there still be snow?
After a pretty good night sleep (could have something to do with my hangover and little sleep from the night before...) I started to doubt a little. Passing Les Menuires (the neighbouring village), snow-less, I fear for a minute we left it to late. But to my lovely surprise Val Thorens was packed with lots of it! We could not have gotten a better first ski-day. Blue sky and white pistes were awaiting us. Quickly getting our rental gear and off we went... 2 skies, 2 sticks, boots, how to get them on again, how to move about on them???? Where are the brakes??? Luckily my fears were ungrounded for as it is like learning how to ride a bycicle (as we say in holland, the country full of bikes!). You never forget! Watch out here I come!
Little setback was the fact that my left eye was bugging me ever since we arrived. Eye drops did not seem to help at all. Lenses out, my glassed on, ski-glasses on top off them to block out the sunlight and wind. Nothing seemed to matter. So here I was on this gorgeous ski-day, with my eyes tearing up, sitting INSIGHT a restaurant, seeing F*ck-all! Luckily I was able to ski some that day. A nights rest will fix it, I hoped. By 6 we were allowed in our shoe-box (read: studio-appartment), small with a bunkbed in our hallway, bathroom and kitchen/livingroom with balcony. How much to expect for 270 euros (incl. Ski-pass)! As we would be outdoors most of the time anyway, this serves the purpose just fine! One our of Siesta turned into waking up late at night ;-) Back to bed again, as we had to be ready for our ski-lesson the next morning.
Well, no skiing for me that day, but a visit to the local docter as things only got worse with my eye(s) overnight. Mira off for her first ever skiing lesson (yes it is different from boarding!), me trying to find the 'hospital'. Can tell you, bit hard when your eyes are tearing up all the time and even normal light seems already too bright! Diagnosis: Eye infection. Cure: eye bath and antibiotic drops 5x a day. Great! But of course it will not stop me going down the slopes! And it didn't. With one contact lens in and my brand new ski-glasses it worked out just fine! I can truly say: In the land of the blind, the one-eyed is king!
As you might have figured out from the pics, we did enjoy apré-ski as well. On Tuesday we made the 'mistake' of going into the bar straight after skiing (read: before food). Result: Attending our wednesday ski-lesson with a hangover and jelly legs. As if Thomas (our very strict but good ski-teacher) knew, we had to do warming-up exercises for a very LONG time! Even now I can remember very vividly The Finger, Waking up the Moll, Egg position and Keep the pressure on your DOWNHILL ski!
The week passed by quickly, but with lots of laughter, beer and visits to the Veronica Bar! We met up with other Sunweb lemmings, going out for a meal, joining up for a beer or even board together, luckily I was allowed to come along on my skies! Only after promising I would learn how to board next year ;-D
Our last night started with home-made pancakes, continued in the Veronica Bar and ended in The Malaysia nightclub, with a great live band! And in this babylon area, I meet someone from the Rainbow. Maxence, we might meet up in Servia this summer. Life is mend to be really!
Our last apré-ski started in the Veronica Bar and ended in the Sunweb bus on our way home!
Thankx Andie, Thijs, Nicky, Chris, Eric, Michael, Erik, Martin, Danny, Yvonne, Rob and of course Mira for great week! Looking forward to our reunion at Queens Day in Amsterdam!
