London - A Dickens of a Tale
After a smooth flight we touched down in London. While waiting for our bags we talked with a bloke who recommended the 'Billy Elliott' show at the theatre across the street from the train station terminal where we would exit. So we had a plan for our rainy London afternoon. The planeload of bags came and Yvonne's luggage was retrieved. I waited and waited yet my bag did not arrive. Finally the baggage belt stopped moving. No bag! I now fear that my bag did not make our quick exit from Spain. After a few more minutes we start to look for the airline luggage claims area and as I turn around I see my abandoned suitcase on the floor a few feet away. Thank goodness, someone had taken the bag off the belt and realizing it was not their bag, left it there. We get on the airport express train into London and head to the theatre and secure the last two tickets available. The day is getting better! The show, with lyrics written by Elton John and based on the movie of the same name was enjoyable. Our visit to London was moving in the right direction! Nothing else could go wrong now! After the show, we picked up our luggage that we had earlier placed in the coat check. As it was raining, I opened my suitcase to retrieve my umbrella. As I moved through the bag, strange I thought, my umbrella is not here and I do not recognize the clothes. Then it hit me, as the second worst rookie travelling mistake had been made...I have someone else's bag! The next few stressful hours at the hotel involved continued unsuccessful calls to the airline. We finally decided to boot it back to the airport and see if my bag was there and return this one (I was worried someone had taken my bag as well!). Upon arrival at the airport, I contact an airline agent that after a disapproving look, checked and confirmed my bag was in customs. About 15 minutes later, he returned with my real bag - which I confirmed by looking at the luggage tag. At this point he informed me about the large 'security fee' that would apply as customs had to hold my bag. I guess the sudden drop in my facial expression from glee on seeing my bag, to shock and horror at the thought of paying a large fine was too much and the agent started to laugh. He was having me on! He slapped me on the back and told me to go on. A real funny end to a really unfunny afternoon.
