Where I stayed
Invited to stay in a local family for 2 nights was a REAL experience. The conditions in which they live are not bad, the most difficult thing to get used to is that their notions of hygiene is very different from ours. But I have been warmly welcomed by Elena and her 5 children and she fed me like her own child, calling me on my cell phone when dinner was ready!
And communication in broken portuguese was... interesting.
I then decided it was enough hard experience, and treated myself in a "normal" backpacker, in a "clean" dorm...and took the Advanced Diving level in a local Diving School. One day I swam with a whale and its calf... magic!
Would it not have been for a few problems on the beach with a very agressive beach boy, and a problem with the eldest daughter of Elena stealing money from me, I would have spend an awesome time in Pemba. In the end there was some really good, and some bad experiences there.
This has been the case throughout my travel in Mozambique. You cannot relax fully and let go in this country, you always have to be careful...
