Wearily, with sore-ish backs & croaky throats we packed up i.e. fecked everything into the back fo Big Bertha - she's a mess already!! Doesn't take us long to make a mess! And no point making up our bed every night so we have decided to just leave it made up for easy access!
We hit the long & winding road for Akori/Mt cook, the highest peak in NZ. We left Lake Tekapo, and headed South West towards Lake Pukaki. Like Tekapo, it shines a beautiful blue colour, especially when the sun shines as much as it did when we were there! The scenery driving alongside the lake on the way up to the village was simply breathtaking and you can see the snowcapped mountains looming in the distance for most of the journey
You're forewarned to fill your petrol tank before attempting the journey....and thank God we had filled Bertha to the top - you really feel like you're driving though an untouched world...not a building or house to be seen and hardly any cars (except for the occasional Wicked camper & being part of the club means your part of an extended family....where everybody beeps, waves & shouts at each other!! It took us by surprise the first time it happened, but now we yell just as loud!!). However one thing aplenty are the stupidly grinning sheep (after all, the last figure we heard was 39 million sheep to 3.9 million people...so we are slightly outnumbered!!)
As we left Pukaki there was good views of mountains coming down into the lake with steep, deep gorges. We arrived at Mt Cook village & took a hike (ok, more like a 30 min stroll) to Hooker Valley & got some amazing pics of the mountains & southern alps....we were literally in the middle of nowhere (& we just praying Big Bertha will see us right as we wouldn't like to get stuck out here!)
Headed the 3.5 hr roadtrip to Queenstown where we're hoping to camp for the next couple of nights.
And that's about the height of it so far Compadres!!
