9 pm - local bus to Bangkok's eastern bus station
11.30 pm - overnight bus to Trat, East Thailand
4.45 am - minibus to Hat Lek, on border
7 am - cross border to Cambodia
7.30am - lift on back of motorbike to Koh Kong
8.15am - first of a series of 4 buses on unpaved road, interspersed with 4 river crossings(2 pedestrian bridges, 2 'ferries') to Sihanoukville
2pm - shared taxi from Sihanoukville to Kampot
5pm - contented sigh over cold beer at sunset, on the dock of a riverside guesthouse, among the palm trees, Kampot, Cambodia...
11.45 pm - swimming in the river amid the sparkling phosphorescence under the moonlight
with my new drinking mates
Midnight - off to bed in my floating hut, moored to the shore, with just threewalls and one side open to the water and the palm trees and the balmy air...
yes, it was worth the tortuous journey!
