Our last day with the campervan was spent driving from the west coast to Christchurch on the west coast via Arthur's pass, more spectacular mountain scenes. After a nights stop over in Christchurch we took the early morning train up the west coast to Picton and the ferry from there to north Island and Wellington. The ferry journey was excellent due to the nice weather and it really lived up to its reputation as a must do journey, again due to the scenery.
Wellington is the capital and is larger than Christchurch but you can still walk between all the main sights. We went to the museum (excellent and free to get in so even more impressive) the government area and just wondered around the harbor and downtown area, all in all having a relaxing time and a few nights out. After 2 nights we collected our hire car to tour the north island, only 190000km on this one...
First stop was Napier, an art deco town (because it was destroyed in the 1930´s by an earthquake and rebuild in the popular style of the time). A good place to stop for the night, but other than the buildings not much to see or do there.
