We spend our Xmas in Yogyakarta (Jogjakarta), which has an old palace (still in use) in a kraton (walled city). The city is much smaller than Jakarta, and is much more relaxing. We had tons of delicious foods here, including cobra! Mmmm! We also checked out a wayang shadow puppet show where one guy plays all the parts accompanied by hypnotic gamelan music. The show was quite interesting, especially since we could watch it from behind as well, though it was a tad long because we couldn't understand much of it. The story was based on the Indian Ramayana, one which we would see and read about many times on our trip, including a great Ramayana ballet in nearby Prambanan.

Just outside of Yogyakarta, we visited the amazing temples at Borobudur and Prambanan. We had a touch of rain during our visit, but nothing to complain about. The worst of it tended to come at night time.
