The island of Bali has so much to offer! There's beaches, volcanoes, temples, and wonderful culture. It's easy to get around the different cities, and many activities on offer. We stayed in Bali for about a week, including New Year's, and it was a blast! Despite the endless cries of "Hey Boss!" or "Transport! Transport!" the people are very friendly.
We stayed at an interesting little place that we'd read good things about. In fact, the only thing about Swastika Bungalows that had any kind of Nazi relation was our concentration camp-themed bathroom. The facilities were all outdoors, and instead of a roof, we were provided with an attractive barb-wire covering, framed by rows of spikes and glass
During our stay, we checked out numerous cities and villages, did tons of shopping, and saw many great cultural performances, including Kecak, Legong, and Barong dances. All were variations of Balinese dancing, but Kecak included a huge chorus of men, followed by some crazy fire-walking by a dude in "trance". The Barong dance also finished by a bunch of dudes trying to stab themselves with a kris (dagger) while in a "trance".
Gunung Batur was another amazing volcano to see, and Besikh and Tanah Lot temples were also quite fascinating as we hadn't seen anything quite like them thus far. Monkeys were fun, if sometimes scary, at the Monkey Sanctuary in the cultural centre of Ubud.
We spent New Year's on the beach, watching tourists and locals shoot off their own fireworks...until about 11:30PM, when it started to rain very heavily. We were forced to retreat to nearby shelter, until about 5minutes before 12, when we decided to rush to a nearby party for the count-down! Happy New Year!
