Our daytrip to beautiful but rainy Halstatt comprised of two things: the quaint town celebrating an elaborate religious holiday (where everyone was decked out in Dirndyl and Lederhosen), and the Salt mines!
The lakeside town was very cute, with a tiny town square where some of the religious ceremonies took place, gorgeous little houses bordering the lake, and little shops and restaurants selling traditional goods and foods.
As it started raining, we decided to cancel our hike up the hill, and caught the funicular up to the Salt Mine (Salzbergwerk). To our surprise, salt is actually more interesting than one would initially expect! You get to change into special protective clothing for an extensive tour of the mines including two slides and a train ride out of the mine! We even made a friend along the way...Joseph the mechanical miner!
We were quite impressed by the salt mine and even got a minature salt sample at the conclusion of the tour! Yay salt!
