Ok, I'll probably write more tomorrow, if I have time, but for now, you should just know that I flew back to the states for my grandmother's memorial service, then flew back to Senegal. And hopefully I'll be able to write more about all this tomorrow, but for now, here's an excerpt from an email I just sent my parents:

I made it safely back to Senegal, though I didn't sleep much on the plane. I was able to catch a taxi from the airport to my homestay, then my mother accompanied me to the taxi rank to take a taxi to Thies... which ended up taking 3 hours (Souleye told me it should be a 1 hour drive) because of traffic and flooding, but I eventually made it to Thies, caught a taxi to CNEPS where Bouna had said the group was (I had no cell service in Thies), found them not there, but got a lady in an office to call Bouna and found out that the group was actually just across the street. So I did get to go with them to see the mosque at Touba (yay Bouna for waiting 2 hours for me to get there!), and then on to St. Louis. It's beautiful here. Our hotel is lovely and right on the Senegal River. It's just off the patio. And I didn't realize it, but the city is actually on an island that has the Senegal river on one side and the ocean on the other, so tomorrow we're going swimming! Things are good. And I was able to use my french and WOLOF to bargain with taxi drivers and get good prices, as well as help translate for a woman on the plane, so I'm feeling good and on top of it. And I slept for most of the bus ride (it was 2.5 hours from Thies to Touba, and 3 from Touba to St. Louis), so I got a little caught up. And most of us are trying to fast for Ramadan (except for the whole no water thing), so we're all a little out of it. 15 out of 20 students. In the past I think it's only been 3 or 4. Yay us for trying new things. I think I probably won't do the whole month, but I'll try it for a bit. It makes breaking the fast at 7:00 PM with croissants and bread with butter and jam and dates and coffe and juice... lovely. Wasn't too hungry for the dinner that followed, and since there was a mix up with the orders, I just shared a chicken dish with a friend. But it's really great here. I can't wait to see how the week pans out :)

Hopefully update again soon!
