To say the least, we arrived without difficulty and were picked up by Abdul to bring us to our hostel, Horizon Backpacker Beach Resort, a mere 10 minutes away from the airport! After figuring out that they DID drive on the left side of the road it made more of a concern that renting a car may just not be the best idea ever by Staci. Kalvin, however, did try to drive by entering the car on the "passenger side," where he found the steering wheel greeting him. We were able to drop off our bags and put them in storage and let them be for the week, no worries.
8 days in Fiji. We met people from all over the place, including this guy from NZ, with whom we chatted it up with the first night. I am not sure what my partner in crime, aka Kalvin, expected of Fiji, but I am thinking it was along the same lines of what I was thought
It rained, and RAINED the last couple of nights/day and just didn't give up. It made the water cloudy, no one was getting extremely burnt as before, the water was a bit cloudy to see down below, and the overall mood wasn't the best. Sun does have an effect. At least for the first couple of days the snorkeling was just amazing and is now most probably one of my favorite activities. Would LOVE to dive... The last day we went out for the final snorkel in the cloudy, rainy weather and we were still able to see quite a bit of the dead and alive (colorful) coral, but for some reason I just was a bit jumpy out there with some of the girls and Rob. I spotted some baby jellyfish and I had looked around to realize that I was the only one in the area. The girls had taken off for the boat and Rob was 200 m away and I started splashing and kicking hard in my flippers to escape the small creatures. I was in a school of them and everywhere I turned there was this mini translucent pouch
On the 3 hour boat ride back to Denarau port near Nadi, I saw a guy with a CBS Bookstore shirt on. That is where we guy books in Ames, and in Ames, IA, only. I tap him on the shoulder and it's Bjorn, the same kid that was a participant on my surfing trip last spring break. I knew that he was going to be studying in Newcastle and we just happened to run into each other in the middle of the south pacific amongst the Fijian islands. What a small world! We realized that we were on the same boat as the kids that had previously hung out with us on the Wanna Taki cruise, and we were all going back to Nadi Bay Resort. This was a much nicer and bigger place than Horizon's was; a couple pools, 2 restaurants and 2-3 bars.
The last day we just hung around Nadi, got some amazing pizza at Mama's, and got ready for our flight to Melbourne...
