With a choice of four different sites, our group participated in walking, swimming, barefoot beach walking and biking events. Some of the group completed two 20K walks on Friday and Saturday to earn IML (International Marching League) credit. IVV World Cup participants got credit for walking in Asia. Two-thirds of Turkey is in Asia with the remainder of the country in Europe.
In 2013, the 13th IVV Olympiad will be held in the Dolomite Alps of Italy. Details can be found at http://www.ivvsuedtirol.info/. If you haven't been to an Olympiad, it is a wonderful way to experience the true international flavor of Volkssporting
A walking tour of Kaleici (Old Town), Antalya completed our visit to southern Turkey. We walked from the center of town near the Roman city walls and the clock tower which was built in 1244. Antalya used to be an important shipping harbor. It was ruled by Rome, then the Ottoman's and the it became part of the Republic of Turkey in 1920. At one point, it was given to the Italians, but Ataturk took it back. Ataturk is known as the Father of the Republic and it's illegal to make derogatory remarks against him.
We walked through an area of Ottoman homes that were built during the 14th century. We also saw Hadrian's Gate which was built to honor the visit of Emperor Hadrian in 130 AD. The pavement between the arches shows wheel ruts in the stone from the Roman era.
The man with the plate on his head is selling simit which is a bagel like bread covered with sesame seeds.
In the 1990's, Antalya built a new harbor. There are many gulet's (wooden boats) in the harbor and we could see the waterfalls at Lara
As we walked back to our bus, we passed a crowd gathering in Republic Square. They were demonstrating against the PKK (Kurdistan Worker's Party) which is a terrorist group of Kurds who had killed 24 Turkish soldiers.
We left Antalya and flew back to Istanbul and the Yastak Sultan Hotel. We had an orientation meeting for our tour of Turkey with travelers who were joining us. Some will tour Turkey and Greece and some will only tour Turkey.
