Our next stop in Syria was Palmyra, site of a Roman city of trading importance, situated out in the desert (well most of Syria appears to be like a desert). The extent of the ruins was impressive, and being out in the middle of nowhere you could enjoy it almost to yourself. The down-side of this isolated location though, was a distinct lack of options for accommodation and food and a derelict town that added nothing to the areas appeal. I was pleased enough, therefore, to move on.
