Krakow, as a former capital of Poland, has a delightful old town as well as Wawel castle as drawcards for tourists.  The town square is a wonderful, huge space, buzzing with activity day and night.  There is a small Jewish area, once home to many more Jews prior to the horrors of World War II.  Trips can be made out to Auschwitz and Birkenau, 2 of the prior concentration camps, by way of a bus taking 1.5-2hrs each way.  I did not make my way out there, but did visit the Salt Mines, which were really amazing.  The salt mines extend down 300m, and are still being used today.  There are some amazing sculptures made of salt, and even a whole Cathedral with salt carvings and salt crystal chandeliers.  As part of your entry ticket, you are entitled to eat up to 5kg of salt from the walls - I hope no-one takes them up on this!!  We did try some of the local food though, including the potato pancakes, and quite enjoyed it all.  We also got to visit the church of John Paul II prior to him becoming Pope.
