Have any of you been to Tallinn? Have you heard of Tallinn? Luckily for me, I read about Tallinn when I was reading about Helsinki, while looking at options in Scandinavia. In the end, we decided to skip Helsinki and head to Tallinn instead. Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, and lies on the gulf of Finland. It has an important history as one of the Hansa trading ports, and has amazing city walls and towers that were important for its protection. It is a lovely quaint town, with incredibly friendly locals, and is well worth a visit.
Ben and I reunited in Tallinn - Ben having arrived from Prague, and me from Norway. We spent 2 days exploring the cobbled streets, tower walls and churches of the town. We ate at a medieval-themed restaurant, where we had rabbit, wild boar and elk to eat. It was then time to board our overnight ferry to Stockholm, for our final city in Scandinavia.
Tallinn has only experienced short periods of independence: 1918-1940 and 1989 to the present. Accordingly, there are a lot of reminders of previous rulers: the Danes, the Germans, the Swedes and the Russians/Soviets.
