Caused by poverty the dogs are forced to live on the scraps they find on the streets and in rubbish bins!! Saying that though there are a lot of very rich people and well cared for dogs, mostly based in the wealthier cities like the capitals ... for instance Guatemala City. In Zone 9 and 10, the wealthier parts of the city, high rises and malls tower above everything. Compare this to Zone 1 and 2 ... practically Shanty Towns!!
Although this being the case, I've enjoyed my whole trip. Learning about the poor and wealthy, how to travel safely and most of all the language and culture!!
Some of my most favourite experiences have been the Fair in Antigua, Guatemala, zooming on the rides and having a buzz experiencing the whole night!! I remember hopping onto the rides, blood pumping through my veins. I wrenched my eyes shut and waited to be swung upside down. As I hopped off a wave of adrenaline hit me. I was petrified but at the same time swarming with excitement. What a ride!!! The best part was Zahn winning me a beautiful pink, stuffed lady bird toy from a marble game. I named her Bubbles!
Another great opportunity was visiting the Animal Sanctuary in Oaxaca, Mexico!! Also one of my favourites was the Bay Islands in Honduras! Over the whole of this trip we have had so many great adventures and times together! Wonderful memories to keep!!
All has not been easy though as, as a traveler, you experience challenges along the way. Language has been a big challenge but also very motivating to learn. Another was being in a country so far away from home and my pets. It has made me love them so much more though!! I just can't wait to get home and squash Alfie, my cat, in a great big bear hug!!
This trip for me has been an absolutely amazing experience and Central America is now on my list to come back to!! :)
