The gangs were formed as a result of a civil war in which 70 000 people were killed. During the war El Salvadorian people went to seek refuge in LA, USA. Because they had come from a civil war they knew all about guns and bombs.
The El Salvadorian people came from a civil war to a crime filled city, with its poorer areas filled with gangs; the two main ones being the 'Bloods' and the 'Crips'. The El Salvardorian people started getting pushed around so they learnt quickly and formed their own gangs, namely the 'Mara Salvatrucha' and 'Barrio 18'.
They became well funded making money mainly through arms dealing, drug dealing and prostitution. When the civil war ended and people went back to El Salvador they bought the American gang culture with them, resulting in violence and crime.
Recently murders have sky rocketed from five per day during the peace treaty to an average of 16 murders per day. This is a lot in a country with only 6 million people in it.
