Flag of Nicaragua  , Leon,
Friday, June 28, 2013

Leon was long ago Nicaragua's capital and is still important in Nicaragua's artistic, religious and revolutionary history. Leon is a colonial town and is famous for its poetry. The most famous person is Ruben Dario, a poet who is buried under the cathedral. The city's masterpiece is the largest in Central America.

Leon was originally founded in 1524 by Francisco Hermandez de Cordoba, who was Spanish. But after a series of natural disasters the Spanish deserted the city in 1610 to rebuild it in Subtiava where it remains.
Leon was the capital for most of the colonial age. During the revolution virtually the entire town fought against Samoza. There are tonnes of remembrance statues dedicated to the men whose lives were lost in the fight.
