Flag of Nicaragua  , Granada,
Thursday, June 20, 2013

A square of concrete paved with bricks in the centre of each town is called the Parque Central. Each town or city has one and it is the hub or as they call it 'the Zocolo'.

The one in Granada appears quite touristy. It is surrounded by restaurants and has been done up in the last few years to make it look nicer. They have put a fresh coat of paint on the tables, chairs and churches and have cleaned them right down.

Surrounding the park are lovely old horse and carts made to give tourists a joy ride around Granada or the locals to complete their errands. The carts also have been freshly painted and decorated with ribbons. Although the carriages are well cared for some of the horses are not, being all bones with a thin layer of paper like skin.

The parque central is a lovely place to hang out and enjoy the wonderful architechture all around!! It also has lots of food, clothing, pottery stalls and trees you can relax under to keep the sun off ... as it is so so hot!!

Hi Amber, very interesting comments from you. The Zoccolo is obviously the meeting place for the people, something like the 'quad' of most universities......the poor horses you describe.....hard work and poor nutrition, I remember seeing the donkeys of Greece heavily laden with big fat westerners and being whipped along by their owners......dreadful to see animals being treated so cruelly.......
