Many farmers grow cacao fruit in this area. Apparently Ecuador has a reputation for fine cacao beans and the farmer gets about a US dollar a kilo.
The fruit is yellow or orange and grows on trees similar to an old apple tree.
The cacao beans are covered by some white pulp/slime that tastes great. After sucking the slime of the beans they are dried in the sun for a few days and then roasted. Finally the beans are ground to make cacao powder.
