Today we toured Kamakura. Kamakura is about 45 minutes south of Tokyo on the Yokosuka line. In the 13 th century, when it became clear the Emperor was going to really control the Japanese government, the feudal lords began fighting for control. The first family to gain control made Kamakura it's military capital. They built a number of beautiful zen temples in the region. However, because of the heat and the fact that our gang is beginning to show the effects of too much touring, we just hit a couple of the sites.

We started at Enkakuji in Kita (North) Kamakura. This temple is considered the 2nd nicest zen temple in Kamakura. It has a very pretty zen garden behind the main temple. Instead of walking about a kilometer to the city of Kamakura we then took the train to Kamakura. At Kamakura we transferred to a private train and visited Hase-dera and the Great Buddha of Kamakura.

Hase-dera is most famous for it;s 11 headed statue of the Amida Kannon carved in the 8th century out of a huge camphor tree. It also has a beutiful garden area renowned for it Hydrangeas.

The Great Buddha is one of the most famous picture sites in all Japan. To be honest, while it's a must see, the statue is about all that is at the site.

In the evening most of the students chose to stay at the hotel to rest and pack. While the rest of the group set out for Sunshine City in Ikebukuro. This is another large shopping and entertainment district. In the center is Namjatown. This site has districts with different food courts. There is a gyoza (pot-stickers) district. They were delicious! There is also a dessert district and an Ice Cream district. Amongst the crazy ice cream flavors they had wasabi and octopus ink flavor. We all had Hokkaido Milk flavor, also delicious.
