Our morning started with a presentation by Margriet Ruurs, author of 26 books for children. Margriet shared her expertise on painting pictures with words and generating ideas for books.  She discussed in detail developing plot, character and dialogue, as well as do's and don'ts about submitting picture book manuscripts.  A few of Margriet's books that you may be familiar with are Emma's Eggs, My Librarian is a Camel, and Wild Babies.

The second presentation of the day was by Jennifer Laughran, an agent with Andrea Brown Literacy Agency.  Jennifer shared ideas on pitching your story and how to write a querying letter. She shared actual queries that have caught her attention.

Our guest speaker for today was Lisa Schroeder, a local writer.  Her topic was "I love revision and so can you."  She spoke of our first draft as being our playground where we simply write and get the story out.  She then referred to revision as the time we really get to work to make the book the best it can be.  During revision, your job is to look carefully at each of your characters to ensure they have shown growth/change over time, strengthen the plot (structure of what happens), and check on your details.

We had time to work on our individual stories and meet for 1:1 conferencing with instructors.  Each of us has at least one book in draft format.  First page critiques continued as well.

As part of our grant, we would like to set up an author visit to BDM for spring 2011.  We arranged a special time to meet with Eric Kimmel and discuss this possibility with him.  Eric was pleased we took the time to talk with him.  He gave us the contact info necessary to make further arrangements if this is the route we take.  We will also be talking with Margriet Ruurs on Friday to see if she would have an interest in an author visit.

A very productive day!
