It was certainly a long day of sunlight as we flew west, arriving on time and without incident to the great sight of Dan driving up in his black Protege. After catching up with him over a wonderful bottle of wine that was waiting for us at our Calgary residence (compliments of the Truchs, both the accommodation and wine – Thanks!) we struggled through some jet lag for a couple of days. Added to that, the reality of being back, homeless, jobless – what we were thinking ;-) Seriously though, it was a fantastic adventure for both of us, one that we wouldn't trade for the world.

We’ve been asked: Are we closer? Of course we are. Travelling for eight months joined at the hips having fun, rising up to challenges both physical and mental, missing our sons, family and friends, meeting wonderful people of other cultures who so generously shared themselves with us, contemplating our next move… all certainly has a bonding affect that we will need to slowly withdraw from. We will have some great memories forever, even the smell of moth balls in our van and storage container reminds me of toilets in India where moth balls are ubiquitous.

The boys are both well. Dan’s looking forward to a few weeks’ vacation to spend with his parents… and the golf course, and Paul is currently in the middle of Cambodia, I think, with a Canada return date of Nov. 14. And there is no place like Canada. My first morning back I rose early to a beautiful blue sky, and when I arrived at the local Safeway store I was greeted with pleasant good mornings from several of the staff. Of course, you say. But, no, the rest of the world is not so friendly, well, except for Sylvain in Nice; most are kind, helpful and generous, just not as friendly.

One of our old cell phones is reactivated, the one that didn’t fall in the toilet last fall. Our number is 403.827.4990. And, yes, we are still planning on a move to Vancouver We go with family and friends’ blessings with the proviso that we get a two-bedroom apartment, preferably in Kits. But we hope to catch up with everyone in Calgary before we move, and/or in the apartment in Vancouver when you come and stay. We will be around Calgary for a while as there’s the Calgary Folk Fest, a lovely wedding and the annual ball tournament that need to be enjoyed but first we will head out to the coast and try and find ourselves a home. (Added later: After a quick trip to Vancouver we have found a lovely old but newly renovated apartment with a guest bedroom in the Kitsilano area of Vancouver so email us after August 8 to let us know when you are coming to visit. Well I better get the last of the blogs published before our next adventure, a new city after 45 years for John and 35 for me.)

Thanks again for keeping in touch with us. The emails helped lessen the loneliness and sometimes confusion that sleeping in dozens of beds during the 232 days of travel offers.

Cathy & John:
I have been sporadically reading your blogs and with each posting I was in awe of your ability to put into words what you had been experiencing. I truly felt your emotions and passion for all that you saw, the people you met and the places you visited.
I will admit this last blog brought tears to my eyes. I am happy that you made it home safe and sound (and still speaking to each other - hahaha). Again, it is a pleasure to read how grateful you were that someone greeted you in the Safeway store!! I think something that we who have not travelled like you take for granted.
Looking forward to seeing you both next week and I am anxious to hear all about your trip.
Welcome back!!
