Finally arriving in Kumamoto, walking into my Apt. I received a pleasant surprise. IT ROCKS!!!!. Really clean, spacious, and just awesome. Since I am roommate-less for about 2 months, I got first dibs on choosing a room. I weighed the consequences between living in the smaller, western sized room, or moving into the larger, yet more difficult to maintain Japanese style room. I figured...when In Rome. (In case youre wondering, the Japanese style rooms have Tatami mats instead of wooden floors or carpet, which means they have to be maintained/aired out b/c of the ridiculous humidity here in Kumamoto. In other words, you get wonderful mildew growing in the mats, as well as teh possibility of some tiny critters as well if not properly looked after). So needless to say Ive had the balcony door open and the fan on just about 24/7. The Room is awesome though and Ill make sure to post the pictures as soon as I get the internet set up.
After receiving my very own flower-pattern futon mattress (WITH matching flower patterened sheets which smelled like fish...blahhh), I decided to IMMEDIATELY hang them up on my balcony to air them out. I then proceeded to unpack and organize the apt. Around 21:00 I realized that a) I hadnt eaten anything in about 8 hrs, and b) there is no food in the Apt. other than the few emergency rations I had brought from home ie. granola bars, chocolate, and fuzzy peaches. So I picked up my map and grabbed my backpack and headed out to the only grocery store listed in the area.
When "they" said that food is expensive here...they weren't kidding. After walking through the grocery store 3 times, I decided to just buy a Pizza, and some veggies. Dont ask how much that cost...it hurts too much =P. (I was later told that the particular grocery store I had chosen to shop at is one of the more higher end places and that I am much better off going ANYWHERE ELSE). After realizing that my apt doesnt have an oven, or should I say, the equivalent which is about as large as a toaster, I tossed my epizza into the toaster/bread oven thingy and proceeded to devour the entire pizza in about 5 minutes flat; bad call. Off to bed to enjoy my new fish-futon.
