I shall make this a very short entry just to facilitate a few images to give you an idea what the Pettah is like but I have included the one of the tuk tuk driver one for a bit of a laugh.
I finished the evening off with another excellent meal in the Yaal restaurant which I believe I told you about earlier, it is the place that specialise in Jafna (i.e. Tamil) cuisine and if this place is an example I cannot wait to get up there. I wanted to visit anyway as it was out of bounds for so long during the war but the delicious food is yet another incentive to go North.
People sometimes have a go at me about "wasting time" when I am on the road and, to an extent, I can understand the thinking behind that. For people with limited time on holiday, say two or three weeks, it is certainly understandable to try and cram as much in as you can. On the other hand, people like myself who have the luxury of a bit of time don't actually have to visit three temples, a holy lake, a museum and a sunset spot all in one day.
I certainly love doing all of the above but I actually derive as much pleasure from getting myself lost in backstreets, eating in a little local huckster of a cafe, wandering about the market (as above) or just riding on a local bus to see where it will take me
Again, some people think I am crazy doing this on the principle that if I am off the tourist trail that somehow I am also off the radar of the police and "safety", or that I am going to end up in some sort of ghetto and run into trouble. On the contrary, I have had some wonderful experiences doing this (Zagreb springs to mind) and, touch wood, I have never run into trouble yet. I think the novelty value helps, especially if you are in a place where people don't look like you. Let's be honest, who does look like me? Gandalf after a rough night on the Hobbit Ale perhaps?
Yes, before you ask, I do realise exactly how bloody lucky I am to be able to travel like this.
I had intended this to be a quick line or two about a day when I did nothing and now look what has happened. I'm rambling again. My late Mother used to quip that I had been vaccinated with a gramophone needle and that is probably not far from the truth. Still, I suppose the idea of a travel blog is that I write about travelling, so I shall attempt to justify myself that way.
Stay tuned, I am on a roll again!
