We set off on our charter outrigger from Coron early in the morning at little unsure of what to expect from our journey to mainland Palawan and El Nido. The boat was somewhat smaller than expected and didn't have the look of a ocean going vessel. But we had assurances that this boat made the trip twice weekly so myself, Shayla, Sean and 5 other Koreans jumped on and we set off. The journey did prove to be pretty smooth and apart from a serious dousing at one stage we made it to El Nido 2 hours faster than we expected. We were lucky that we chose the charter too as the regular ferry leaving the next day arrived 22 hours late after an impromptu stop for repair on a remote island.
El Nido is well placed near the northern tip of Palawan in amongst some cliffs which protect it from some stormy weather and also nicely restrict its growth. I found myself a nice place on the beach and sat back to enjoy my few days here. For most of the time I hung out with Sean and Shayla whom I met in Coron.
Did some diving on one day and I saw my first turtle on South Miniloc island (made famous by Jacques Cousteau). Good conditions for diving and with a tasty BBQ lunch on an uninhabited island the whole day was fantastic.
On another day we did an island hopping trip where we did snorkeling, swimming and a bit of hiking whilst hopping from one island to the next. With stunning views everywhere, lots of fish and good food the only concern was enjoying yourself and not getting burnt.
Also, tried windsurfing on a few days in El Nido bay. Supposedly, the best season is typhoon season when the wind is relaible but as a beginner I was happy with what we had. I was absolutely useless needless to say but with some training from Shayla I managed to go straight and also got a few tacks but the jibes were the end of me. So I couldn't sail back to shore and had a tiring and demeanding 15min swim back to shore :(
The 5 days in Palawan were great. Its quiet but if you are happy to chill out and enjoy some water based activities its a great way to spend your free time.
