A bit of a disappointment upon arriving in Kampot - we came down to this small town to do a hike up to Bokor mountain station and hotel but we found out it was closed for 3 months to fix the road. Bokor was once a popular mountain resort overlooking the sea but in 1975 when the Khmer Rouge took over, it was completely deserted and remained untouched as a ghost town until now. It would have been cool to see it but what the hey! I hear that they are going to renovate it into a plush hotel too - such is the price of tourist development.
Anyway, about the Nudie Man I hear you ask. Well on our first day in town, myself and Matt were just walking a busy street, when we spotted a man coming down the middle of the road...completely starkers. The crazy look he gave us prevented us taking any snaps but needless to say it was an interesting occurrance. That night as we related that interesting story to our barkeep, we were informed that in fact 'Nudie Man', as he is known, is a celebrity in town. He is a resident of the local looney bin and he gets leave each day to go for a stroll. Apparently its down to him whether he gets dressed first or not.
Not being somewhere that has really caught the tourist craze again yet, there is not a huge amount to see in Kampot, so we headed off on a day trip to see some of the local caves and also to head down to Kep. Kep town is a fishing village but used to be an exclusive seaside resort before the Khmer Rouge took over. As all holidays were banned under the Khmer Rouge it was cleared out in 1975 and still is pretty deserted today. There is a very eerie feeling around the town. I am sure it won't be long until it is redeveloped though. Dropped by a pepper plantation (apparently Kep pepper is famous) and salt farm on the way back to conclude and good day on the road.
Just two days though to 'do' Kampot and we were off to the north to Battambang.
