I spent a few more days in Bangkok after returning from the south. I had a few things to get done before I could head onto the north of Thailand. One thing was to sort out my China visa. This has proven to be difficult as they have really tightened their requirments ahead of the Olympics. Now you can't get a visa without a return flight and receipt of accomodation. This is not something I want to do as part of the attraction of the trip is to be able to move freely without these kind of limitations. I will try again in Chiang Mai but I suspect I will hit the same problem.
While in Bangkok I met up with a few friends from the south again: Clare from Asia Divers and some of her friends from OZ; and the girls from Ealing along with Canadian Nick who works in BKK. Nick was able to give us quite a tour of 'all parts' of Bangkok nightlife.
With a few days to kill before my night train to Chiang Mai I decided to head to Kanchanburi for one night. Took a bus their and then a scooter to the C&C hostel reccommended in my travel guide. Just as reccommended I was able to rent a floating room on the river where I had to crosss a bridge to o to bed. Nice touch!
Also, went to see the famous Tiger Temple - several monks started to care for maltreated animals and now their temple is practically a zoo. The best part is that unlike a zoo you can walk everywhere and even pose with the tigers. Second day I visited the Muang Sing Khmer ruins from the 13th century. Proved to be a tough trip with local train delays and a good bit of stress trying to get back to Bangkok for my night train. Needless to say I amde it.
