Okay if you don't want to worry about me, then this next story won't help! Ha ha! Mom close your eyes!
Yesterday was hilarious! Jerry, Ethel (the Country Reps aka the CRs) and I went to the big town called Mymensingh. Of course we took the bus and oh that was fun! The bus was jam-packed and all eyes were on us. Anyways in town I went to a tailor then went on the internet. Guess what, it is 20 taka or about 25 cents for one hour on the internet- isn't that awesome! Anyways then we went home on the usual overcrowded bus. The bus ride is about an hour give or take 30 minutes depending on the traffic and the driver. So anyways I still don't know where the heck I am. The town that we live near is called Ram Chandrapur but there are no town signs or road signs anywhere and I swear all the villages look the same. And the farm that we live on is tucked away, about a good 10 minute walk from the main road, so you can't just spot it from the bus. Jerry and Ethel have made a couple of mental notes of things such as a tin shack on the right and there is a big fish pond about 5 miles before our stop. But really there are about a million fish ponds along the way and a tin shack is a common as... well its common I'll tell you that.
Without any real markers around where we live and the fact that we were driving at night, we accidentally went right by our little town and drove on and on without us realizing it. The country looks all the same: rice fields, rickshaws and small villages on the side of the road. After a while we began driving through a forest. I never noticed a forest before! Am I that dense to not notice a forest among the rice fields? We kept driving through the forest and slowly the red flags went up and we all sort of looked at each other and thought "is this right?" Then we went over a bridge... okay the biggest red flag was waving in our faces. We have never gone over a bridge before I swear! It became apparent that after a good 10 minutes of driving through a dark forest and over a rotten wooden bridge we knew for sure we had missed our stop. Oh my goodness we were lost! We had no idea where we were. Had we turned somewhere? Were we always going straight? I was no help and the CRs had no clue either.
One would think that under the circumstances of being lost in a foreign country and not knowing the language I probably should have been scared or at least a bit nervous. But hhhhheck no! I thought it was the greatest thing ever! We were lost, what an adventure! Maybe if I was by myself I would have been scared but there were 3 of us, so I had company. Now we had to somehow find our way back with the little Bangla we knew! It was great, absolutely hilarious! The people on the bus were no help, they had never heard the name of our town so we decided to get off at the next village and ask for directions to our town. We tried to ask where we were but no luck. We tried to ask if people knew where Ram Chandrapur was, but no luck. We found the police "station" which was really just a local place where there just so happened to be police men with really big guns. Side Note: You know you are sheltered when the first time you have ever seen a gun close up is at the age of 23 and you giggle when you see it! Silly me. Anyways the police were very nice but they had no idea where our village was. But to make a long story short, well I guess it is too late for that, we finally made it home, about 2 hours later! Safe and sound. Other than that life is slow and peaceful, except for learning Bangla, my language lessons are pretty intense. My brain hurts after the 2 hour lesson. Then I have to study at least 4 hours after that! Its like craming for a test everyday! I can't complain though because it will be pretty awesome once I know the language. It is pretty cool now, and it has been raining non stop. We keep eating eggs for breakie and rice for lunch and supper. I am not sick of it yet, I love Bangladeshie food! And I have not been sick either! Hurray!
