Abu Simbel has 2 temples that are worth seeing! It is 3 hours from Aswan, south near Lake Nasser, almost at the Sudan boarder. The only way to get there is to sign up with your hotel, take a private van and go with the guarded convoy. There is no public transport to get there- you have to go with everyone else. Apparently this is for safety reasons, but I wonder whose safety this is for? Definitely not for the tourists because our convoy of over 20 minivans and buses is a pretty easy target! Oh well it is kind of cool to say that I have been in a guarded convoy in the desert in Egypt!

We paid 70EE for the bus ride there and back (6 hours in total), I think we got a free breakfast with it. We left at 4am and got to Abu Simbel at 7am. Then we were allowed 2 hours to explore and then we had to be back on our bus at 9am sharp! The entrance fee was 90 EE and again they don't accept student cards here.

The 2 temples were constructed in the 13th Century BC by Ramesses II for himself and his wife Nefertari. In ancient times it was known as "Temple of Ramesses, beloved by Amun." Over time the temples became unused and were forgotten about. The desert crept over the temples and sand covered them both. Forgotten. Lost forever. Until it was rediscovered in 1813. I am so glad it was because both temples inside and outside are impressive. I love stories like this. And I wonder if there are more hidden gems in the desert?!

Abu Simbel had to be relocated because of the Aswan Dam. They found a higher place for the temples and rock by rock they relocated and reconstructed the temple. I mighty feet that is for sure!
