We have stopped a few kilometres from the Italian border in Slovenia for the night; it is easier to camp here than in Italy. It's only four o’clock so we have quite a lot of time before we can go to bed. We are down a little track in a small forest between the autobahn and possibly the noisiest train line in the world. There is also what looks like two sinkholes, with heaps and heaps of rubbish thrown in and around. But back a few days to Croatia…
Thursday we spent the day exploring the southern end of Cres which is very unpopulated and mainly bush. We went to another church ruin and we found what looked like a very good swimming spot apart from the razor-sharp rocks and sea urchins. The weather was perfect, so warm and sunny.
Friday we decided to leave Croatia and head towards Italy so we would have some time there before we go to the UK. We caught a ferry from Cres to another Island called Krk and rode through Krk and over a bridge to the mainland of Croatia. The bridge was really amazing, it was so high, from one mountaintop to another over the sea. We then rode through the city Rijeka which was very stressful and confusing. The Navigation GPS on the iPhone doesn’t have maps that cover Croatia so we were trying to work out how to get through this city using only a very broad paper map from Schurli. We actually got surprisingly not lost. At the Croatian/Slovenian border all the police were very hot (Felix says extremely) women. It only took us about an hour to ride across Slovenia to where we are now.
We are going to go for a walk now to see what is around here, sometimes there are some really interesting surprises in the random places we choose to stop (or rather, where Nina sometimes decides we will stop).
We are back from a walk around Slovenia and we did find some interesting surprises! We stood on the edge of the train track and watched some trains go past and remembered Philip in Keiselbronn. We found a huge hole in the ground, so huge it could almost have a football field in the bottom, plus the steep sides of the hole made it massive
As we were getting ready for bed, Felix went to put Nina into first gear so she wouldn’t roll into us while we slept. He said the clutch cable was feeling funny so as he pulled it a few times to try and see what was wrong it just snapped in his hand, we had been driving with the clutch attached by a few thin wires! Luckily, ever-prepared Felix with his huge box of tools and spare parts had a cable and was able to promptly get Nina back into shape. A good outcome from her latest trick!
