When I woke up this morning I had about thirty centimetres of snow resting on me! It had snowed so much through the night the tarp had collected all this snow and was sagging right down onto me. Felix only had a few centimetres above his head, another few hours and it would have weighed down onto him too.  How to get out from under a load of snow without getting the sleeping bags wet? And what to do with another day that begins so early in a funny little town covered thickly in snow. Already, there were many people working on clearing snow, it was like when an anthill is ruined and the ants get to work rebuilding swiftly and professionally. All the snow clearers looked very professional with all the tractors and reflective clothes. Like last time we had so much time, we were lead straight to the supermarket but it was still too early this time so we wandered round the town for an hour, it was so nice to have a whole hour slip past unnoticed as we walked around.

We went back to check Nina and our stuff, we hadn't bothered to even pack up our beds yet, then went to the local Museum, mainly because it was warm and dry and we wanted to use the toilets. We couldn't actually go into the museum, it wasn't ready to be seen, so we sat in the hallway and I knitted and Felix read Ural manuals and woodworking brochures in German. The lady from the museum kept walking past and looking at us funny, but a nice man came and gave us pieces of Styrofoam to sit on so we weren't sitting on the cold stones. Another man, very drunk, also stopped and muttered and mumbled to us for a while too about having lived in Melbourne once, before wandering out into the snow singing to himself.

It was a wonderful thing to see when we had to leave the museum for closing time that the roads were free of snow and salted! We quickly scurried back to Nina asking a local along the way if the road was salted all the way up and down the other side of the mountain. Yes! It was supposed to be salted so we decided to try to make it to Graz. It was snowing again when we left but as soon as we were down the mountain it was a lovely day. It was hard work for Nina getting up the mountain with the salty water stopping the spark plugs from working properly and we got a bit confused and ended up on the autobahn which was a bit too fast and stressful but we made it! And in great time too. On the way through Graz we stopped at this cafe 'Scherbe'‚ Felix was hanging out to go there for coffee and orange juice and we also had a kebab from this other place Felix was very excited about (Michi and Jelly know what I'm talking about). And now we are happily and safely with Ernstl and Gita, it is very nice to have covered a longer distance, and to be in such good company. So that's it for now, until the next round...

Maria and Edwin on

I've just read out the full set of the recently-uploaded blogs to Edwin, while we have a hot drink to give him a break from writing his thesis. I still laughed all the way through at all the same bits as when I read them to myself earlier. We both think you guys are terrific, that you are truly exploring and travelling in Europe in the best of ways.

Eddie's comment as he saw these last photos of you in the museum is "Felix should get a book!" so that you have more to do than read the Ural manual while Floss knits :-)

Now that you're in Graz with the family, I feel that you're somehow 'home again'. Can't wait for the next blog! Sending you all our love from us both!

P.S. Flossie, can I put in a request for a pair of red wooly socks? Or are you not taking orders yet? :-)
